An excerpt from Andy's MFA thesis paper:

Search is evident throughout my work. My painting process is an adventure with uncertain destination but infinite directions. Therefore, spontaneity is the essence of this project, although I was not directed by my own emotional output, but by the Spirit. I see myself not as a “creator” but an “art-aeologist”, who observes and excavates the hidden treasure. To make any painting in my series, the first step would be laying down foundational marks. These marks are mostly intuitive, unexplainable by rationality. As I gradually fill the canvas, there is intentional control of how these marks relate to each other and make up the composition. Further steps require working on top of the old ones. It is a process of seeking, revealing, and affirming. I use contour lines as well as highlight and shadow to make a form appear three dimensional.

This method can be compared to Christian life. The initial attempt represents walking by faith and seeking guidance form God. Faith is never established on sight but on trust. It is a commitment without knowing the result. The “refining” step represents my responsibility of fulfilling the work. It requires patience, discernment, and trust. God never fails to amaze me with His plan. Whenever I make an “unintentional” mark which turns out to be surprisingly good, I know it did not happen by accident.
